We appreciate the Texas Association of Business sponsoring an Austin billboard celebrating the “Texas-sized” savings Medicaid Managed Care has produced. Medicaid Managed Care is a success story, keeping costs down while increasing access to care and improving health outcomes. While Medicaid Managed Care in Texas still has room for improvement (don’t we all?) it is an excellent example of a successful privatized care program under public oversight.
Our colleagues at the Texas Association of Health Plans shared the story behind the billboard:
Texas Association of Business Highlights Medicaid Managed Care Savings
This week, the Texas Association of Business (TAB) launched a two-day billboard campaign in Austin, using the message of the day billboard on Interstate 35, to point out the positive impact of Medicaid Managed Care. The billboards read:
“MEDICAID MANAGED CARE HAS SAVED TEXAS TAXPAYERS OVER $10 BILLION, TEXAS ASSN. OF BUSINESS TXBIZ.ORG” and “MEDICAID MANAGED CARE, SAVING LIVES AND SAVING DOLLARS, TEXAS ASSN OF BUSINESS, TXBIZ.ORG.”
TAB CEO Bill Hammond said, “Taxes have been on the mind of people this week. Not only has this program saved taxpayer dollars, it has improved both access to and quality of care.”
TAB also shared TAHP-commissioned studies by Milliman and Sellers-Dorsey showing that people using the managed care program have fewer hospital admissions for diseases like diabetes, asthma, GI infections, UTI’s and bacterial pneumonia. The reports also shows an 83 percent customer satisfaction rate among families with children in the managed care program and that 93 percent of families report having access to their primary care physicians when they need them.
