“Window shopping” on the health insurance marketplace

Healthcare.gov is allowing consumers to “window shop” until Open Enrollment begins on Saturday, Nov. 15.

When “window shopping” for health coverage, pay close attention to these three items:

  1. Network – the doctors and hospitals that are available in the plans you are considering.
  2. Monthly Premium Cost – this cost is a recurring, monthly payment (similar to car insurance or a monthly cable bill)
  3. Co-Insurance Costs – these costs vary depending on the kind of plan you choose. Sometimes a plan with a low monthly premium has high costs, so consider paying a little more in monthly premium to get 0 or low co-insurance cost.

Silver plans potentially offer the best combination of cost offsets and benefits. Give Silver plans careful consideration when making your decision.
